Art at FCJA

At FCJA our Art Curriculum intends to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. We aim for our children to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. Drawing is taught in every year group as we regard it to be the foundation upon which all other areas of art are established.

Our Art Curriculum helps pupils gain a knowledge of how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. Children are taught about a range of periods of art history so that they understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.  A timeline of these art periods alongside artists studied whilst at FCJA is displayed in every classroom.  These are then referred to during every unit of work to support with identifying, comparing and discussing art.

Each year group studies at least three artists (including architects or designers) during the academic year.  These artists have been chosen due to being either great artists or artists that we feel reflect the demographic of our local community.

As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. Children produce their own creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.  Sketchbooks are used as an illustrative journal of each child’s thought process.  We regularly include time for children to evaluate and analyse creative works of others using the language of art, craft and design.
