Wellbeing at FCJA
At Field Court Junior Academy, we are committed to supporting the emotional, physical and mental health and wellbeing of our pupils.
The children experience ‘Wellbeing Wednesday’ every week. On this day, no core lessons are taught; instead they take part in PSHE, Wellbeing, RE, PE and Music lessons. All of these subjects can play a huge part in the balance of their wellbeing and the children enjoy a break from the structure and intensity of ‘core’ subjects.
During the ‘Wellbeing’ session, the children move through a variety of units over the course of the year.
Environmental: In this unit, they get outside and complete activities such as litter picking, pond dipping and growing things in our outside area.
Trying New Things: During this unit, each year group tries a different food group, learns elements of first aid, different aspects of sign language and how to make something using origami.
Mindfulness: In this term, they go on a local walk with a purpose (e.g. creating a story stick), try yoga, breathing exercises and meditation.
Community: We have strong links with our local community and the children in all year groups visit the library, our local care home, the infant school and our local church over the course of the year. Each year group has a different purpose/ focus for their visit.
Active: Being active is such a huge part of wellbeing so each year group takes part in an activity that is different to their PE lessons. These include mini marines, Zumba, Salsa and STOMP dance.
Creative: Getting creative can help many people’s wellbeing so we offer a range of craft style activities that the children can experience during this unit. These include sock puppet making, outside art, graffiti, mosaics and photography.
We aim to give our children a wide range of experiences and encourage them to reflect on how the activity made them feel. This can help them to identify activities that they may enjoy doing outside of school to support their own wellbeing.
