Reading lessons

Whole Class Guided Reading lessons take place 4 times a week for 30 minutes. The aim of these lessons is to develop all necessary skills through the use of high quality texts. Over the year, we plan for children to have access to a range of texts: fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Within these lessons, we ensure that children also read with fluency and expression from a range of text and extracts. We also focus on different question types and model how to answer them, before allowing the children to complete these skills independently.

In our poetry units, we study the poet, the content and meaning of the poem and focus on performance of the poetry: individually; in groups and chorally. The majority of children take part in these lessons and are supported to access the group text, those that are unable to access the Year group curriculum are given bespoke intervention.

On PPA days, the children take part in ‘Readerful’ lessons. Readerful is everything you need to get all children reading more – so that reading for pleasure isn't left to chance. It provides beautiful, inclusive picture books to share aloud with every class, motivating levelled books for independent reading.

Readerful is packed with vital vocabulary, diverse characters, brilliant authors, fascinating facts, playful poems, and the spark that will make every child reach for the next book. The independent books are in the levelled book sections, that the children can take home to enjoy.
