How do we support SEND in reading?
At FCJA, we support SEND children in many different ways. Our first focus will be early reading skills and we support this through the specific teaching of phonics (using ELS) in Year 3 and through specific phonic interventions for other individual children.
Once children have acquired the necessary phonemic knowledge and understanding, we then support them through the Project X Code Intervention. This is a very prescriptive, phonics based intervention (Oxford Reading levels 3 - 11) that is implemented by trained teaching assistants and is used throughout the school (mainly Years 3 and 4).
In the classroom, children who need extra support, are identified as 'red readers'. This means that we will hear those children more regularly on a 1:1 to develop all skills including verbal comprehension
During whole class reading sessions, children will be supported by the class teacher and TA to ensure that they can access the text. This is done in many different ways, such as: pre-teaching, paired reading, group reading etc
We also support children through after school interventions. These normally focus on written comprehension as they are short burst interventions of about 6 weeks.
