Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) at FCJA

In line with the SEN Code of Practice, we have high expectations and aspirations for children with SEN. We believe that ALL children are entitled to an education that enables them to:

  • Achieve their best
  • Become confident individuals living fulfilling lives
  • Make a successful transition into adulthood

We ensure that the FCJA SEND policy works within the guidelines and inclusion policies of the Code of Practice (2014), the Local Education Authority, Equality Act 2010 and other relevant policies and legislation. In compliance with the Code of Practice, we plan and provide for children with SEND within the four broad areas outlined below:

  • Communication and interaction
  • Cognition and learning
  • Social, emotional and mental health difficulties
  • Sensory and/or physical needs

Some children and young people with a physical disability (PD) require additional ongoing support and equipment to access all the opportunities available to their peers.

Principles

At Field Court Junior Academy, we adopt the following principles regarding successful inclusive education:

  • To ensure all pupils are offered full access to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum - ensuring that they can become 'S.T.A.R.S in the making.'
  • All children will be given the opportunity to reach their full potential educationally, emotionally, socially and physically.
  • All teachers view themselves as teachers of pupils with SEND - teaching such pupils is a whole school responsibility.
  • Pupils' Special Educational Needs will normally be met in the mainstream classroom.
  • Pupils' views should be sought and taken into account.
  • Parents and carers have a vital role to play in supporting their child's education and therefore good home/school links are established.

Special Educational Needs

Children who are seen to have Special Educational Needs are monitored carefully and are given appropriate interventions according to their specific needs. Click on the document below to read the DfE SEND Code of Practice.

Behaviour, Social and Emotional Needs

Inclusion takes into account all the needs of the children and these include how a child behaves. FCJA promotes an ethos towards positive behaviour management and the children and staff are encouraged to use and model the S.T.A.R.S (Self-confident, Trustworthy, Aspirational, Resilient, Socially-minded) values at all times.

Children's social and emotional needs also need to be considered carefully if a child is to reach their full potential. To help us in this, FCJA has a dedicated pastoral team who support children (and their families) across the school in a variety of ways. A large role of the pastoral team is to run nurture, self-esteem groups and other interventions which complement the school's S.T.A.R.S values.

All pupils' progress will be monitored through monitoring systems. Children will also undertake a termly, online survey which will analyse their thoughts about their own wellbeing as well as their attitudes towards learning and self-worth. Children who are not making the expected progress and/or who are deficit in one or more of the key areas in the attitudinal survey, will be identified for intervention. The SENDCo and Senior Leaders will work with the pastoral and teaching teams to implement effective support strategies.

The 'S' Places

We have four dedictaed places in school (all of which are named after a place which starts with the letter 'S': The Snug, The Spce, The Sportyard, The Sensory Garden.) These places provide children with specially designed repsite spaces to meet their needs and help them regulate  and refocus. Each place is different in what it offers the children.

What is the Local Offer?

Every local authority must publish a Local Offer which will detail the level of support available for children and young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities. It must include information about education, health and care provision as well as training, employment and independent living for young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

Who is the Local Offer for?

The Local Offer is for:

  • children and young people with SEN and/or disabilities from birth to 25
  • their parents and carers
  • practitioners and professionals.

What is the idea?

The Local Offer should:

  • make it easier to find out what parents/carers need to know
  • give information about what is available
  • tell parents/carers where they can get further information
  • make services more responsive to local needs.

The SEND Code of Practice says that the Local Offer should:

  • provide clear, comprehensive, accessible and up-to-date information about the available provision and how to access it
  • make provision more responsive to local needs and aspirations by directly involving disabled children and those with SEN and their parents, and disabled young people and those with SEN, and service providers in its development and review (4.2)

What does it include?

The Local Offer includes information on:

  • how children and young peoples' needs are identified
  • how their needs are assessed
  • the special educational, health and socail care provision for children and young people with SEN or disabilities
  • opportunities for training and employment
  • support for independent living
  • how provision is funded
  • leisure activities and support groups
  • signposting individuals to more information, advice and support
  • arrangements for travel to and from school and other settings
  • the help available to resolve disagreements.

The Local Offer must also inform individuals about services provided outside their area which local people are likely to use. A full list of what must be included can be found in the SEND Code of Practice, section 4.30, page 66.
